Billionaire Haim Saban has put his Malibu mansion on the market for a whopping $75 million. Saban is best known for his role in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise.
According to real estate records, Saban and his wife Cheryl purchased the property in October of 1987 for a mere $1.3 million. However, the couple gutted the home in the 1990s and performed renovations.
The home is located on 120 feet of oceanfront, offering breathtaking views, especially of southern California’s sunrises and sunsets. It contains nine bedrooms and 12.5 bathrooms and encompasses 11,000 square feet. Saban is also giving the option for a $300,000 per month rental option.
Saban was born in 1944 in Alexandria, Egypt. He enjoyed his first modicum of success as the bass player for the rock band “Lions of Judah,” which grew popular among the London nightclub circuit during the 1960s. He later shifted his attention to songwriting, a decision that ultimately paid huge dividends.
In 1983, Saban relocated to Los Angeles where he made his mark composing theme songs and musical scores for child-themed television programs. His work was featured in countless shows, notably “Dragon Quest,” “Inspector Gadget,” “She-Ra Princess of Power,” and “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.” During this period, Saban wrote nearly 4,000 songs, resulting in millions in earnings over several decades.
In 1988, Saban founded Saban Entertainment as a television production company. Just prior to this accomplishment, he visited Japan and became intrigued by an unusual program featuring Spandex-clad youths performing martial arts.
With piqued interest, he acquired the North American rights and ultimately purchased, in its entirety, claims to a show called “The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” producing a pilot episode.
The show proved cheap to produce because Saban brainstormed the idea to repurpose much of what first appeared on the Japanese television series.
Despite this effort, the initial response from Hollywood studios proved less than enthusiastic. Saban received rejections from every television producer except those at Fox. He persuaded Fox to take a chance and both parties profited as the show turned out to be a momentous success.
The Power Rangers only scratched the surface of the notable achievements Saban would achieve. He also produced hits such as “V. R. Troopers,” “Sweet Valley High,” “Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog,” and “Digimon: Digital Monsters.”
Saban’s company joined forces with the Fox Children’s Network to form Fox Kids Worldwide. In 2001, Saban and Fox sold the network to Disney for a cool $5.3 billion. When the dust settled, Saban walked away with a share of $1.6 billion.
Under Disney’s tutelage, however, the Power Rangers struggled to reach their previous heights. Ergo, in 2010, Saban reacquired the franchise for $100 million. In 2018, he resold it to the Hasbro toy corporation.
Today, Saban’s net worth equals $5 billion. The fruits of his labor have enabled him and his wife to enjoy other luxuries besides the Malibu mansion.
One such asset is a 22,000-square-foot, four-acre spread in the ultra-exclusive Beverly Park community outside Los Angeles. Real estate professionals estimate that this property is worth around $100 million.
