The iconic Notre Dame cathedral reopened its doors on Saturday, more than five years after a devastating fire nearly destroyed the hallowed landmark. Dozens of distinguished guests attended the event, including Mexican actress Salma Hayek and her husband, François-Henri Pinault, CEO of the French luxury group Kering. Pinault’s $113 million pledge was pivotal in the restoration efforts. The power couple’s presence highlighted the global interest in preserving one of Europe’s lasting cultural treasures.

Hayek and Pinault joined a roster of influential figures at the Paris ceremony, including US President-elect Donald Trump, First Lady Jill Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Prince William, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Their attendance underscored the cathedral’s role as a cultural landmark and a symbol of resilience.

A Family’s Commitment to Cultural Heritage

The Pinault family’s generous pledge followed the shocking 2019 fire that engulfed Notre Dame’s renowned spire and roof. Their €100 million ($113 million) donation was part of a broader €500 million ($565 million) commitment from L’Oréal, LVMH Group, and other French luxury and beauty giants. Pinault stood out for his refusal to take advantage of an allowed tax credit. The move was widely praised as a selfless act of cultural stewardship.

“Today more than ever, I feel proud to be part of the Pinault family,” Hayek wrote in 2019. “Not only for their heartfelt participation in the reconstruction of Notre Dame de Paris but also because their contribution won’t be claiming any tax deductions from the government.”

François-Henri Pinault comes from a long tradition of philanthropy. Under his leadership, Kering has expanded its focus on sustainability and cultural preservation. His family’s commitment to Notre Dame reflects their dedication to supporting art, heritage, and community.

A Moment of Global Unity

Millions worldwide watched as more than 1,500 dignitaries attended the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral. Both Hayek and Pinault described the event as a deeply personal moment. Hayek shared her thoughts on social media, writing, “Honored and standing in awe at the reopening of Notre Dame—a true moment in history and a symbol of resilience and hope.”

Their presence alongside several influential global leaders highlighted Notre Dame’s universal importance. While the cathedral has long been a symbol of Paris, its recent restoration has made it a rallying point for international solidarity.

The 2019 Fire and the Road to Recovery

When the fire broke out in April 2019, it destroyed the 19th-century spire and parts of the roof. The images of flames engulfing the 850-year-old Gothic masterpiece shocked the world and led to an outpouring of support. Donations poured in from individuals, corporations, and governments, allowing the ambitious restoration project to progress.

Hundreds of skilled artisans, architects, and historians have worked tirelessly to restore Notre Dame to its former glory. The reopening is a significant milestone in the years-long effort to reclaim the cathedral’s status as a spiritual icon.

Salma Hayek: From Hollywood to Humanitarian

Hayek’s involvement in the restoration reflects her commitment to cultural preservation. Raised by a family of Lebanese and Spanish descent, the native of Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, has long advocated for social and cultural causes.

Since marrying Pinault in 2009, Hayek has worked with her husband to support numerous philanthropic initiatives. The result is a well-balanced public profile as an actress, humanitarian, and stepmother.

A New Chapter for Notre Dame

For Hayek, Pinault, and everyone else who contributed to this historic project, Notre Dame’s reopening embodies the power of collective effort and reflects the enduring importance of cultural heritage. According to Hayek, the moment represents “resilience and hope”—values that Notre Dame will inspire for future generations.
